Nautical chart

A chart combines shoreline, depths, hazards, and marks used to plan a passage.

What this represents

A nautical chart is a working document, not a decorative map. Surveyors measured depths at specific positions; later chartmakers assembled those soundings and other observations into a guide for navigation.

How to investigate it

Look for soundings, the scale and units, the date of survey, and corrections on a real chart. Compare the density of measured points.

What the display cannot establish

Unsurveyed space between older soundings can conceal features; a chart must be current for practical navigation.

Look closer: What is the danger of treating a blank patch as measured safe water?

Ship’s compass

A suspended compass card indicates direction relative to magnetic north.

What this represents

A gimbal can help keep the instrument level as a ship moves. Mariners still had to account for magnetic variation and interference from the vessel when translating a heading into a course.

How to investigate it

Examine the card, lubber line, gimbal, and any correction information.

What the display cannot establish

A single compass reading does not establish a ship’s position or the course actually made through wind and current.

Sextant

Mirrors bring a celestial body and the horizon into one view so an angle can be measured.

What this represents

With an almanac, an accurate time, and calculations, a measured altitude contributes to a navigational position. Observations depend on a visible horizon and careful adjustment.

How to investigate it

Check the index mirror, graduated arc, sighting optics, and the recorded observation time.

The instrument alone cannot supply position without time, tables, and correct reductions.

Marine chronometer

A protected clock keeps a reference time while a vessel travels across longitudes.

What this represents

Reliable time was central to determining longitude from celestial observations. Sea clocks had to perform despite motion, temperature changes, and long voyages.

How to investigate it

Compare a clock’s rate before and after a voyage and look for documented adjustments.

What the display cannot establish

An elegant dial does not prove that a particular clock kept accurate time on a specific passage.

What this represents

Lead-line readings helped mariners and surveyors measure water depth. The soundings could be plotted on a chart, but each reading sampled only one place.

How to investigate it

Check depth markings, units, tide conditions, and the spacing between soundings.

What the display cannot establish

A row of readings cannot guarantee the absence of a reef between sampled points.

Look closer: How would you plan soundings to find a narrow obstruction?

Fresnel lens

Concentric glass elements bend and concentrate light into a visible beam.

What this represents

Fresnel lenses improved the usefulness of lighthouse light. Different arrangements and rotations produced identifying characteristics that mariners could compare with charts and light lists.

How to investigate it

Observe prisms, lamp position, rotation mechanism, and a light’s published characteristic.

What the display cannot establish

A model does not identify a specific lighthouse or prove a light was visible in every weather condition.

A hull must carry loads, resist water, and offer room for cargo, people, and supplies. Construction varied by place, purpose, available timber, and period.

A model simplifies details and cannot identify a real ship without plans, marks, or provenance.

What this represents

Steam propulsion changed schedules and routes by reducing dependence on favorable wind. Engines also required fuel, machinery spaces, skilled maintenance, and a different organization of work.

How to investigate it

Follow the path of steam to a piston and then to a propeller shaft or paddle mechanism.

What the display cannot establish

A cutaway does not show fuel consumption or whether a particular vessel was safe and efficient.

Look closer: Which part of a voyage became more predictable under steam?

Ship’s log

A dated entry records observations, course, weather, events, and work aboard.

What this represents

Logs are valuable primary sources for a voyage. They reflect what a particular recorder saw, chose to write down, and had time to enter. Comparing them with charts, manifests, and other accounts strengthens interpretation.

How to investigate it

Identify the author, dates, position estimates, corrections, and gaps in entries.

What the display cannot establish

A log may be mistaken, incomplete, or silent about the experience of many people aboard.

Cargo manifest

A list connects goods, quantities, ship, port, and intended recipients.

What this represents

Manifests help historians reconstruct trade routes and commerce. They are also administrative records: actual loading, loss, or offloading may differ from what was declared.

Compare the manifest with customs records, bills of lading, port registers, and the ship’s log.

A declared cargo alone cannot prove what remained aboard at the time of a wreck.

What this represents

Containerization reshaped ports and logistics by making handling more uniform. It altered labor, equipment, routes, and the speed at which goods cross modes of transport.

A model does not explain conditions in any specific port or aboard a particular vessel.

What this represents

Space aboard ship was limited, and the contents people carried could reflect work, family ties, rank, and mobility. Actual inscriptions or documented ownership make a chest much more informative than appearance alone.

Study maker’s marks, repairs, inscriptions, and a documented ownership trail.

What the display cannot establish

A staged chest cannot stand in for every sailor or tell whose objects these were.
