Archive Note 001 — The Absent Entry

The chronological registers associated with the Alley clock have been examined in full.

No interruption appears in the folio numbering. The bindings remain sequential, the shelf ledger accounts for every listed volume, and no withdrawal slip is outstanding.

Physical examination of the shelf produced a different result.

Dust compression, fading, and wear along the rear support indicate that an additional volume remained in place for a considerable period. Its dimensions do not correspond to any item presently entered in the catalog.

There is no accession record for such a volume. There is no record of its removal. There is no numbered space in which it could have been filed.

The Archive therefore contains evidence of an absence for which no absence has been recorded.
