There is a place on the shelf where something stood.
The measurements are exact. The fading is uneven. The rear support bears the impression of a binding that remained there longer than the volumes surrounding it.
The physical record remembers what the written record denies.
The volume was removed.
The shelf ledger was copied again.
The accession numbers were made continuous.
The Archive was amended around the absence.
Whoever corrected the record understood that removing an object would not be enough. The place it occupied also had to be made impossible.
But records are not kept only in ink.
They remain in dust, fading, pressure, wear—and in the spaces that no explanation can satisfactorily fill.
It was only the first one noticed.
